Job Description

Position Overview This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1 located in Fairbanks! Responsibilities The main duties of this position include all aspects of planting, cultivating, fertilizing and mowing at Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge to promote waterfowl habitat through farming practices; coordinating with the Statewide Waterfowl Program and other waterfowl management agencies to implement research and management programs for waterfowl in Interior Alaska; conducting bird counts during migration seasons; maintaining farm equipment; maintaining rail fences, nature trails, viewing platforms, and other Refuge infrastructure; responding to public inquiries & concerns about Creamer’s Refuge. Additionally, the selected candidate will assist in communicating with public, local, state, and federal agencies about programs that maintain and enhance fish and wildlife populations and protect refuge resources; compile and analyze data to support recommendations for waterfowl harvest regulations and to assess human impacts on the refuge; alert supervisor to refuge uses and identify areas of illegal activity; assist area staff with big game harvest monitoring and habitat surveys; perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned. Qualifications Experience operating farm equipment including tractors with attachments for improving and maintaining wildlife habitat using agricultural techniques. Excellent waterfowl identification skills and experience with waterfowl capture, banding, and research. Possess strong oral communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of passionate individuals or user groups with differing viewpoints. Experience using computers and computer software, especially Microsoft Word and Excel, to conduct biological data entry, compilation, analysis, output, and reporting. Experience collaborating with professional biologists on wildlife projects. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management. Substitution: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement. The position combines outdoor agricultural work at Creamer’s Refuge with opportunity for waterfowl focused field work and professional research and management duties. The position is stationed in Fairbanks with office space in the Farmhouse Visitor Center on Creamer’s Refuge. The incumbent will have opportunity to work closely with other biologists and with non-profit partners on Creamer’s Refuge. The incumbent may also have the opportunity to travel to other parts of the state for field work. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to engage with and support local stakeholder groups that use the refuge and research scientists from intra/inter government agencies and the private sector. The incumbent will have tremendous opportunity to contribute to research and management on a daily basis. Working Conditions The majority of work will occur out of doors on the Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge located in Fairbanks. A typical work day could include exposure to extreme heat or cold, biting insects, prolonged sitting or standing, physically demanding farm labor, inclement weather, and public inquiries. This is a position that requires strong independent thinking and decision making.
